The Attraction and Close Relationships (ACR) Lab at Florida State University utilizes evolutionary perspectives to enhance relationship science. More specifically, we draw from sexual selection and life history theories to better understand long-term relationship cognitions, emotions, and behaviors. In our research, we often use dyadic, longitudinal studies and multi-method assessments such as observational assessments, self and partner reports, and physiological measures to better understand the functional factors that impact long-term relationship satisfaction and longevity. Some of our recent work, for example, has examined the role of partner physical attractiveness—in terms of both facial attractiveness and body attractiveness—in marital satisfaction. Other recent work has tested whether people’s motivations to engage in uncommitted sex prior to marriage have implications for their later marital satisfaction and longevity.
